Østby family history, 1976
"Østby 1778-1974," prepared by O. David Ostby, circa 1976. Family record starting with Lars Davidson Østby, of Kommisrud, Norway, born 1778. Lars' second son, David Larsen (Anglicized to Larson, 1821-1906) married Johanna Johnson Hage (1830-1917) in 1858, after the birth of their first child they immigrated to Spring Grove, Minnesota.

Martha Ostenso papers, 1924-1980
Translations by Johan Tofteland (English to Norwegian), of fifteen poems from "A Far Land" by Ostenso, a Norwegian-American novelist, who wrote in the 1920s and 1930s; a collection of clippings (1924-1938); and Joan N. Buckley's Ph.D. dissertation on Ostenso, University of Iowa, 195 pages. For an article about Ostenso by Joan N. Buckley, see "Norwegian-American Studies," volume 28, 1979. O. E. Rvaag translated into Norwegian Ostenso's "The Story of a Pioneer of the Prairie, Einar Hoidale of Minnesota." The original and the translation are in the Rolvaag Papers, box 26, volume 17.

Papers of a Norwegian-born artisan and farmer of Ostrander, Minnesota, consisting of correspondence, diaries, legal papers, and pamphlets. The correspondence, 1854-1894, consists of Norway letters, a Civil War letter, and letters from New Ulm, St. Peter, Spring Valley, Walnut Grove, Preston, Hurdal, Red Wing, Minnesota; Coon Prairie, Sparta, Muskego, Wisconsin; and Revillo, Dakota. -

Ole O. Ostrem reminiscences, 1858
Typewritten copy of an article based on a diary recounting the experiences of a sea voyage in 1857. Ostrem was a Lutheran clergyman. -
Hogan Ouren autobiography, 1907
An account by an immigrant from Kristiania, Norway, who came to Quebec in 1853, covering his life up to 1907. He describes his experiences in Chicago and as a sailor on Lake Michigan journeys to Colorado and California settling in Pottawattamie County, Iowa, 1866, as a merchant-farmer and finally moving to California in 1905. 29 pages, typescript. Three different copies of the account are included in the file, one of which was published in Nebraska History in Summer 1977 and includes portraits of Ouren as well as several pages of explanatory notes. The account itself is also notable for the fact that it is originally written in English, rather than being translated from Norwegian. -
Asbjørn Ousdal papers, 1935-1951
Papers of a Norwegian-born osteopathic physician and surgeon of Santa Barbara, California. The clippings, correspondence, pamphlets, and pictures, including "Vinland Saga" (1937) by Ousdal, deal with the founding of Norroenn Federation of America and its promotion of Leif Erikson Day. They deal also with Ousdal's fossil museum, including his collection of fossil whales rated as matchless by the Smithsonian Institute. Ousdal is the author also of 'Our Revolting Society' (1945) and of several monographs on paleontological subjects. He made translations of Sanskrit and Old Norse into English and invented the Solar-Ray. -
Gunder Nelson Overland (Olson) papers, 1910-1964
Overland was born in Drangedal, Norway. Emigrated in 1890 and settled first at Appleton, Minnesota where he worked as a carpenter. Appointed as a mail carrier from Benson to Glenwood.
Includes a clipping "The mail did go through" about Gunder Olson delivering the mail in all types of weather. Gunder was partially crippled in one leg; letters from his brother in Norway (circa 1930); estate settlement papers. -
Anton Gustav Helgeson Overn sermons, 1879-1905
"A Pioneer's Proclamation: Uncompromising Truth/Unfailing Love," (1983, 751 pp.) the translated sermons of a minister who served the Norwegian Synod from 1879 to 1905, in parishes of Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Missouri, and Utah. The translator, Alfred Victor Overn, is a son. -
