Gulbrand Loken clipping, 1980-1982
A review of Loken's "From Fjord to Frontier, A History of Norwegians in Canada." Loken, the son of immigrants to Canada from Eidsvoll, Norway, became professor of Educational Administration at Calgary University in 1971.
His book is the first comprehensive account of Norwegian migration to Canada. It centers on the western provinces that have the greatest concentration of Norwegians.
Also includes a copy of the publication within folder. -
Lokensgard family papers, 1915-1994
A series of reminiscences translated and bound into one volume, "printed for the Lokensgard Kindred." Translations were made by Emil O. Ellingson and Hjalmar Lokensgard.
Authors of reminiscences include: Mrs. Sigrid L. Ellingson (sod roof, covered wagon, Indian outbreak of 1862; Prof. Knute Lokensgaard, "Christmas in Pioneer Days." Touches upon a prairie fire; Oluf Lokensgaard, "Reminiscences"; Ole Lokensgaard "Pioneer Stories." Touches upon: coming to America by boat, crossing Lake Michigan by steamboat, German Grove/Nerstrand, language barriers, sod roof, prairie fires, Lauritz Larsen, B.J. Muus, Christopher Lockrem, Ole Ericksen Sando, moving to the Dakota Territory 1861, prairie schooner, Big Woods, Abraham Jacobson, winter of 1861-62, returning to Rice County, Minn., Indian uprisings in Nichollet County, 1862, reminiscences of Nicollet County, Lake Prairie Township (school and church) in the 1860s, a visit with Ole Bull, and Christmas memories, added January 2008 3 double oversized banker boxes (look to available lower shelving near end of collection). Carl L. Lokke papers, 1872-1965
Biography/History:
Carl Ludwig Lokke was born to Oscar and Carrie Gunderson Lokke in Minneapolis, Minnesota, April 28, 1897. Carl had four siblings: Albert Lokke, Edna Lokke Isaacs, Lars K. Gravem, Roy N. Gravem, and Harold H. Lokke. He spent much of his youth in the Northwest, including parts of the Seward Peninsula. In the Kougarok precinct his grandfather was United States Commissioner. There Carl started his elementary education at a Territorial School opened for Inuits. Later he went to Nome High School (1913-1914), and eventually transferred to Olympia High School in Washington (1914-1917).Carl enrolled for military training at the University of Washington (1917-1918), but performed the bulk of his undergraduate degree at the University of California, Berkeley, majoring in German and history. From 1922-1924 he held a teaching fellowship at the University of California and was selected to assist Carlton J.H. Hayes of Columbia University. Eventually Carl went to NEw York for higher education. Columbia University awarded him a fellowship in 1924 and a lectureship in history in 1925.
Starting in 1935 Carl worked at the National Archives. He was an active member in the Society of American Archivists, American Historical Association, Minnesota Historical Society, Norwegian-American Historical Association, and many others. At the time of his passing in 1960, he was on the editorial board of Norwegian-American Studies. Carl was married to Laura Wendt Lokke.
A biography on Carl Lokke was published by H.B. Fant and reprinted by the American Archivist (Society for American Archivists), Vol. 23, No. 3, 1960 July.
Scope and Content:
Articles, clippings, correspondence, diaries, maps, notes, and photographs collected by an archivist, author, and educator. The material concerns the Lars Gunderson family, and the career of the Monitor Gold Mining and Trading Company of Alaska. The papers formed much of the basis for Klondike Saga, by Lokke, published posthumously by NAHA in 1965. -

Odd S. Lovoll papers, circa 1975-2010
Biography/History:
Odd Sverre Lovoll was born in Sande, in Møre og Romsdal, Norway. He immigrated to the United States in 1946 and is a naturalized United States citizen. In 1958, Lovoll married Else Navekvien. They have two children: Audrey and Ronald. Audrey has two children, and Ronald has three, all of which are mentioned in dedication pages in a number of his written works.
Lovoll received his education both in Norway and in the United States, passing university exams at the University of Bergen in 1961 and at the University of Oslo in 1966 and 1967. Lovoll graduated from the University of North Dakota (M.A. 1969) and from the University of Minnesota (Ph.D. 1973). He served on the faculty of the University of Minnesota from 1967 to 1970. For thirty years, Lovoll served on the faculty of St. Olaf College. He retired from the King Olav V Chair in Scandinavian-American Studies at St. Olaf College in 2000. From 1980 until 2001 he served as publication editor for the Norwegian-American Historical Association.
Lovoll was decorated with the Knight's Cross First Class of the Royal Norwegian Order of Merit in 1986 by Olav V of Norway. In 1989 he was inducted into membership in The Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters. He was inducted into the Scandinavian Hall of Fame at the 2001 Norsk Høstfest.
Scope and Content:
The bulk of the material in the Odd S. Lovoll papers revolve around his published works. This includes correspondence, art work, photographs, notebooks, and research notes. Lovoll has published many books, including:

Peter C. Christianson interview, 1995 September 26

Christianson regarding being a Norwegian-American. Christianson was a lobbyist and lawyer in Madison and Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He was a partner at the law firm Quarles & Brady.
