Through this celebration, Norwegian Americans constructed their own, though quite contested, vision of the past and the present, a social and cultural construction that both accommodated and resisted dominant Anglo-American conceptions of assimilation." A revised version was published by the University of Massachusetts Press, 1994, as Ethnicity on Parade: Inventing the Norwegian American through Celebration.
