This thesis was submitted to the graduate faculty of the University of North Dakota.

The Wig Debate Society was established in 1890 by Norwegian immigrants, from the Setesdal Valley in Norway, who settled in the Red River Valley of Minnesota and eastern North Dakota. The Society provided an opportunity for friends and acquaintances to gather and build a deep understanding of life in America. The meetings were held at the Wig Store in Bygland township in Polk County, Minnesota.</text>
