Midwestern Observer newspaper, 1934
Issues nos. 1, 3, and 4 of a monthly published and edited by Trondby Fenstad (Chicago), a second-generation Norwegian American. Only four or five issues of a journal claiming to be a voice of liberal opinion were published. -
John Frohlin papers, undated
Bibliographical compilations on the voyages and discoveries of the Vikings. Frohlin, an engineer, Bayonne, New Jersey, owned a large library on this subject. -
Grotnes Machine Works article, 1973
An issue of "Inland" (1973, no. 1) containing an article "The Round World of Grotnes." Charles C. Grotnes, a Norwegian, founded the Grotnes Machine Works and developed metal forming techniques. The Grotnes Works became a subsidiary of Inland Steel Container Company in 1967. -
Julius Boraas papers, 1891-1997
Papers of a professor of education at St. Olaf College: articles on educational subjects, a history of the Boraas family, correspondence, biographical data, clippings, diaries (55 volumes, 1899-1951), and a record of Boraas's public addresses. Some material concerns his work as superintendent of schools in Goodhue County, Minnesota, and with the Minnesota State Board of Education, on which he served 28 years. -
Ruth Lima McMahon papers, 1866-1976
Correspondence, articles, clippings, and accounts concerning the settlement of Griggs County, Dakota Territory (1881), and pioneer life there. Letters written by Mrs. McMahon's parents, Ole Lima (1860-1931) and his wife Martha (1868-1900), make up the bulk of the collection. Translations of most of the letters and accounts are by Mrs. McMahon.

Carl Søyland papers, 1916-1976
Articles, clippings, correspondence, manuscripts, unpublished research notes, lectures, and a scrapbook of a Norwegian-born journalist and author, who came to the United States about 1920 to study music, but who found the life of a "tramp-journalist" more interesting. He traveled all over the world writing for newspapers, sometimes using the pseudonym Viggo Vey. He edited "California Vikingen" (1924-1925) in Los Angeles. In 1926 he began his association with the Brooklyn, New York, newspaper "Nordisk Tidende," of which he became chief editor (1941-1962). He is the author of two books, both published in Norway: "Langs landeveien" (1929) and "Skrift i sand" (1954). -

Minutes, clippings, histories, sewing and cooking guides of two women's organizations in Northfield, Minnesota. The second club, organized in 1939, was dissolved in 1950. -
Carl L. Boeckmann papers, 1914-2000
Clippings, photos, and exhibition descriptions of a Norwegian-born artist who came to the United States in 1887. He painted portraits, landscapes, and religious subjects. The papers were collected in connection with an exhibition of Boeckmann paintings at the Hennepin County Government Center (October 4-6, 1976) under the sponsorship of the Richfield, Minnesota, Bicentennial Commission. His painting "The Battle of Killdeer Mountain" hangs in the Minnesota Capitol Senate hearing room.
Includes photos and description of the exhibition (Hennepin County Government Center, 1976); catalog of paintings compiled by Marilyn B. Anderson from research and exhibitions from Sept. 1967 to Nov. 2000. 6 pages (lists 94 paintings, usually with present owner); and photography of self-portrait. -
Morris Halverson memoirs, 1939-2000
Our Norwegian Ancestors of 1868, a 32-page account based on the experiences of emigrants from Solør who left Christiania on April 4, 1868, and arrived in Quebec 13 weeks later. Centers around the families of Amund Amundson, Ole Halverson, and Gunder Gunderson, whose journey continued by box car to La Crosse, Wisconsin, and on to areas near Blair, Wisconsin. Their life in the pioneer communities is described up to 1878.
Translated by Arup N. Garson of Mondovi, Wisconsin. Printed in 1939; "En Soløringer's oplevelse i Amerika" translated by Erik A. Halverson. 31, 9 p. Written in 1938-39. Includes "The Golden Age of Steam Threshing," by Erik Halverson. 9 p. Morris was born in Hale, Trempeauleau County, Wisconsin, died at Strum, Wisconsin. -

Copies of letters between a Norwegian-born Lutheran clergyman and a former parishioner, Jennie Hartmann, containing reminiscences of the Ballard Lutheran Church in Seattle, Washington, and biographical information about Haavik.
