Flaten Art Barn was built by Flaten and students in 1932. It is named after its designer/builder and the founder of what is now the Department of Art and Art History at St. Olaf College, Arnold Flaten.

Einar Haugen transferred from Morningside College to St. Olaf to study under Ole Rolvaag. Haugen eventually joined the faculty at Harvard College and was a member of the Board of Editors for the Norwegian American Historical Association.
