Bygdebøker
Hovland Bygdebok Index
The Hovland Index identifies which Bygdebøker (Norwegian Community History Books) are located in the Rolvaag Library, St. Olaf College, Northfield, MN.
The Norwegian bygdebok is one of the best sources of Norwegian genealogical information. It is a history of a specific community, recording who lived where, and when. It may also include birth, marriage, and death dates; landholdings and chattels; physical descriptions of the farms, buildings, and residents and their possessions; and accounts of historical events. Some may trace family lines back to the late 16th and early 17th centuries. Bygdebøker are published in Norwegian and often do not have indexes.
In 2017 the government decided to abolish some of the counties and to merge them with other counties to form larger ones, reducing the number of counties from 19 to 11, which was implemented on January 1, 2020.
Norway is divided into 11 administrative regions, called counties. The counties form the first-level subdivisions of Norway and are further divided into 356 municipalities (kommune, pl. kommuner/kommunar).
