Glen B. Hoidale biography, 1901-1984
A biographical sketch by Glen B. Hoidale and two cassette tapes covering the life of a Norwegian American who after a life at sea came to the United States in 1924. He worked for a time as a safety inspector in New York and Pennsylvania. He moved to Wichita, Kansas, in 1928, where he was a salesman for the International Correspondence Schools until he retired in 1966. -
Carl J. Foss narrative, undated
"The Immigrants: An Autobiography," a 95-page story of the life of John (presumably the writer) who was born at Raak in the Bjugn Fjord area of Sør Trøndelag. He emigrated in 1902, via Hull and Liverpool, and came to Virginia, Minnesota, where he became a construction worker in Mesabi Range towns. His wife, Inger, arrived in 1905, and the story continues with their family life. They lived in different places in the United States, Canada, and Alaska. The story ends with a note about their life in Palo Alto, California. While in Virginia, Foss was converted to Methodism by Carl Schevenius. -
Johan Wikander biography, 1975
"From Grimstad in Norway to Florida in the 1830s: Knut Sørensen Bie (1812-1884)," a translation by a Norwegian of an article published by "Selskapet for Grimstad Bys Vel." The Knud Bie who is written about came as a master mariner to the Jacksonville, Florida, region and, according to the account, "was well established by 1840." In the census for 1840 he is listed as John Johnson. He continued to live in the Jacksonville area until his death -

Eigel Strömsöe article and letters, 1892-1906
"A preliminary English version" of an article published in a Norwegian journal, based on about eighty letters written to his parents in Levanger by Andrea Stomsoe between 1892 and 1906, with extensive excerpts from the letters. Stromsoe was born 1869 and studied pharmacology at the University of Kristiania. He immigrated to America in 1892, and worked at drugstores in Brooklyn, N.Y.; Park River, N.D.; Morris, Minn.; Chicago. In May 1895 he returned to Brooklyn where he spent the rest of his life. In 1893 he married a fellow emigrant whom he had known in Kristiania, and they had four children. The family made an extensive visit to Norway in 1906. Andreas died in 1917, 47 years old.
"The letters describe Andreas' working and family experiences as an immigrant…making his way in America, include his observations on numerous aspects of the American and Norwegian scenes of the era, comments on the doings of many relatives, and expressions of his outlook on life." (Introd. by Richard Palmer). Includes a family tree compiled by Palmer, and photographs of the family and places in Norway associated with the family; and information about Andreas' four sisters.
Also includes letters from Andreas Strömsöe to his parents, Peder Gustav and Emilie Wold, 1892-1906. -

Nils Kolkin papers, undated
Kolkin emigrated with his family from Gjerpen, Telemark, to the Christiania settlement, Dakota county, Minn. In 1865. He was a student 1872-4 at Marshall Academy, Marshall, Wis., and at Augsburg Seminary in Minneapolis, and also at the University of Minnesota. He bought 320 acres in Dakota Territory in 1883. In 1886 he moved to Thorsby, Alabama, writing that he intended to make that his home.
In 1878 he published (Chicago, Skandinaven) Winona, a verse narrative based on the Dakota legends about Winona. Overland (pp. 82-87, 405) calls him the "most ambitious of the early poets" and his volume "unique in the literature of Vesterheimen as the only book devoted entirely to the Native American." In 1883 "Ogsa noget om onskekvisten" was published in Skandinaven (Sept. 11). A manuscript poem (four pages, "En sang: hor trommene vrivler Brutter af til stad" (18 stanzas and author's note) is included here. He published "Det norske settlement sondenfor Decorah I dets beyndelse" (Decorah Posten, July 28-Sept. 1, 1896); Photocopy included here. Letters written 1896-1901 (?) from Thorsby, Alabama are also included in photocopy.
He calls himself (on title page of manuscript here) "the author of ‘From India to Mars'" which hasn't been identified. In 1891 he published "Ethereal matter, electricity and akasa," Sioux City, Iowa, J.M. Pinckney book and stationery co., 1891. 75 p. The University of California-Berkeley has about 16 manuscripts on linguistic and other topics.; In 2002 the Luther College library transferred to the NAHA Kolkin's history of the Norwegian settlement in Goodhue county and neighboring counties (Dakota, Rice, Dodge and Olmsted) which it has received in 1940, source not known. Also, the poem mentioned above, and letter to the editor (Nov. 11, 1894, 4 p.) asking if the editor (of Decorah Posten?) would consider publishing the history, and offering to expand the work by writing histories of Houston and Fillmore counties, so it would cover southeastern Minnesota.
The manuscript includes many corrections, interpolation, supplementary pages (e.g., 16a,b,c,d), crossings-out. "Historiske oplysninger om de norske settlementer i Goodhue County of omegn."- I. Indledning: Minnesotas aelrde historie.
