Lloyd Hustvedt papers, circa 1957-circa 2003
Papers of a native of Urland parish, Leon township, Goodhue county, Minn., who graduated from St. Olaf college and received a PH. D. from the University of Wisconsin for his dissertation on Rasmus B. Anderson, which was published by the NAHA in 1966. He taught Norwegian at St. Olaf from 1954 until retirement, and served as executive secretary of the Association from 1959 to 1999. -
Nels Amundsen Skogstad letters, 1875-1880
English translations of letters written from Goodhue county, Minnesota, to his parents in Voss. Skogstad attended a Voss teacher training school and taught briefly at Vossestrand. Emigrated summer 1875 and worked on farms and taught, attending St. Olaf's School in Northfield fall of 1877.
In the 1880 census of Leon township he is living with Ivar D. Hustvedt, teacher and klokker of Urland Church. He married 1881 and moved to Codington county, S.D. where he took a homestead. Letters of Nov. 18, 1875; Feb 6 and Aug. 6, 1876; April 10, 1877; March 7 and Sept. 26, 1878; Jan. 7, 1880. Skogstad tells of farming methods, the success of many who had emigrated from Voss; he advises his parents not to emigrate to Goodhue co. Since land was very expensive.
The letters were found on the Haga farm in Voss in 1985 and translated by Albert Haga. Contributed by Clarice Aakre (Rt. 1 Box 98, Conrad, Mt. 59425) July 1996. also included are photocopies of photographs of Nels, wife and two children; and a son Amund as an adult. -
Goodhue County School District papers, 1875-1913
"On August 8, 1875, at the summons of Pastor B. J. Muus, a meeting was held in the schoolhouse in school district no. 56 to organize the affairs of a Norwegian religion school." Ole. J. Solberg was hired for 1874 for $80: 60 days at $1 a day, and living expense of $2 a day for 2 weeks. Most of the book consists of records of payment by term, through 1913; and minutes of annual meetings. Some individual receipts are pasted in the book. -
Clause Hanson Sether family history, 1958
"History of the Clause Hanson Sether Family," telling the story of his father who emigrated from Vardalen, Trondelag, to Goodhue County, Minnesota, in 1868, and later moved to Jackson County, Minnesota.
A pamphlet, "Early History of the Upper Midwest," compiled by Evelyn Wigen Watland is included (from "History of Jackson County") -
Amanda Lien Rachie autobiography, 1943-1949
"Early Minnesota Family History," an account written by the granddaughter of Nils Gunnarson Lien, who emigrated from Vang, Valdres, in 1852 and came to Warsaw Township, Goodhue County, Minnesota in 1857. Amanda Rachie was married to Elias Rachie, a Minneapolis attorney and writer.
Topics: Wanamingo and Dr. Just Christian Gronvold; Native Americans stealing freshly baked bread; and keeping a can of salmon on hand in case the minister paid a home visit. Added June 27, 2013: memoir (untitled), most likely written by Elias Rachie, lines starting with, "Both my father and mother were born in Nordfjord, Norway" (46 pages typescript, ca. 1943). Topics: 1871 ocean crossing; passengers Rasmus Wisness and Rasmus Anderson; wagon train to Yellow Medicine County; diphtheria and funerals; life in a dugout near Granite Falls, Minn.; Rev. Topics: living in small, framed house; Christmastime (preparation, cooking and baking, and traditions, including Julebukking); school (mice problems, spelling bee, and playtime); dresses and hand-me-down clothes; homemade apple jelly in small, wood pails; shopping at the Wangs country general store; gathering eggs from the hen house; "shoulder horses" to carry pails of water; parlor use in home; threshing time; spinning wheel and making balls of yarn; sledding in Red Wing; and first bicycle. -
Carl Swain memoir, undated
Autobiographical account of a Norwegian American who spent most of his life in educational administration. A graduate of St. Olaf College, class of 1907, he was given an honorary degreee by the College in 1940. J. Christian Gronvold papers, 1878-2002
Papers of a physician in the Holden Community of Goodhue County, Minnesota, and a member of the Minnesota State Board of Health. Dr. Gronvold was born at Fron, Gudbrandsdal, Norway, and studied and taught at the University of Kristiania. He emigrated to the United States in 1865 and received a medical degree from Humboldt Medical College, St. Louis, Missouri, in 1869, after which he came to Goodhue County. -
Julius Boraas papers, 1891-1997
Papers of a professor of education at St. Olaf College: articles on educational subjects, a history of the Boraas family, correspondence, biographical data, clippings, diaries (55 volumes, 1899-1951), and a record of Boraas's public addresses. Some material concerns his work as superintendent of schools in Goodhue County, Minnesota, and with the Minnesota State Board of Education, on which he served 28 years. -
Holden Township, Goodhue County, Minnesota history, 1876-1935
Papers relating to the history of a township in Southeastern Minnesota. Information about Holden Church, which is in Wanamingo township, can be found in P0537 Congregations, Minnesota, Kenyon. Vang Church in Holden township is listed under Dennison, Minnesota in that collection.
Includes photocopy of a manuscript paper read at the centennial (4 July 1876), and a typescript copy; old map of Holden Township (n.d.); A letter (6 December 1935) from J. Jørgen Thompson to the Reverend S. O. Simundson (Pastor of Dale and Holden Churches, 1928-1941) indicates that Simundson loaned the manuscript so a transcription and copy could be made.
