Zacharias M. Toftezen papers, 1806-1939
Correspondence, legal papers, and biographical information of a Norwegian who immigrated in 1847 and came to Washington in 1850. Toftezen was probably the first Scandinavian in the Stanwood area. His mother, sister, and brother came later. A Toftezen memorial stone was erected in 1939. The bulk of the collection consists of letters written in Norway, Washington, and Door and Oconto counties, Wisconsin, by and to members of the Toftezon family, and deal with church, crops, health, and weather. A collection of clippings (1931-1939) tells of the Toftezen family and of the dedication of the monument. Includes photocopy of article by H.M. Tjernagel, "Toftezons, et kapitel af norsk-amerikansk historie" in "Symra," v. 10 (1914) pp. 240-250.

Svein Strand papers, 1913
Manuscript of a biography of Claus L. Clausen, pioneer minister in the Norwegian Lutheran church, published in "Symra 9" (1913), its translation by Rangvald Kvelstad, 20 pages, "Barneskolens betydning...," 16 pages, "Religionsskolen...," a lecture, 14 pages, and a letter to O. M. Norlie. Strand was a Lutheran clergyman and Clausen's son-in-law. -

Richard W. Solberg papers, 1938-1999
A well-known Lutheran pastor, historian, writer and educator, Solberg was born in Minneapolis, son of Carl K. Solberg, brother of Carl T. Solberg. He graduated from St. Olaf College in 1938, later received graduate degrees from the University of Wisconsin (1939) and the University of Chicago (1952), and graduated from Luther seminary in 1943. He served as pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church, Ingleside, Illinois, 1943-1945, and later taught history at St. Olaf and Augustana College in Sioux Falls, S.D. He served as religious affairs advisor for the U.S. Military Government and the U.S. High Commission in Berlin (1949-1950) and as representative of the Lutheran World Federation in Germany (1953-1956). From 1964-1973 he was vice president for academic affairs at Thiel College, and from 1973-1982 he was director for higher education for the Lutheran Church in America.
In 1957 he published As between brothers: the story of Lutheran response to world need; in 1961, God and Caesar in East Germany; in 1980, How Church-related are church related colleges?; in 1985, Lutheran higher education in North America; in 1992 Open doors: the story of Lutherans resettling refugees; and in 1991, Miracle in Ethiopia. Copies of all except the last are in the library collection.; 1 volume "A student traveler's European journey, Summer 1938." 160 p.; 1 vol. "My first eighty years, a personal memoir." 1949 p. + index. 2 copies.; 1 vol. "Rev. Carl K. Solberg, 1872-1954; sketches of his life and career."; Various pagings. Olaf Skattebol papers, 1900-1927
History/Biography:
Olaf Skattebol emigrated from Aal, Hallingdal, Norway, in 1887. Skattebol studied theology under Gisle Johnson where he served parishes in Lofoten and Halling before accepting a call to Blue Earth, MN in 1887. He later served parishes in Lawrenceburg, TN, Merrill, WI, Walcott, ND, and later taught at Columbia College, Everett, WA.
His son, Christian, graduated from Luther College in 1902. Christian Skattebol went to the Philippine Islands as a U.S. government-sponsored teacher in 1904 and later entered business in the islands, returning to Oakland, CA, in 1927.
A second son, Lars, attended Pacific Lutheran Academy and St. Olaf College. A daughter, Signe, married J.U. Xavier, one of Pacific Lutheran's most distinguished professors. Pacific Lutheran University has the papers of Johan Xavier.
Scope and content:
The collection includes biographical data concerning a Skattebol, correspondence, manuscripts, photographs, and family histories. Several of the items in the collection relate to his two children, Lars and Mary, both born in the Philippines (1915 and 1917).
