Jacob A. Nelson papers, 1933-1939
John Hanson and the National Domain (22 typescript pages) by an Iowa attorney, and brochures announcing the publication of Nelson's book, "John Hanson and the Inseparable Union" (1939). John Hanson was "President of the United States in Congress Assembled" (1781-1782). -
Mons Samuel (Monssini) Baker papers, undated
Publications of a Minneapolis railroad machinist who emigrated from Voss in 1859 as Mons Sjurson Bakkethun, eventually settling in Goodhue County, Minnesota. He received a preacher's license from Yale University in 1878, an M. A. from Carleton College in 1879. He was active as a singer in Minneapolis late in the last century. He wrote and published poems in Norwegian and English, often meant to be sung to familiar tunes, and tracts expressing his socialist beliefs. "Strilevisen-Fiskevisen" (32 pages) includes poems linked by autobiography, "Monsinnis lille katekismus" (32 pages) states his economic beliefs in catechismal format. He published six "Monssinian Cards" on similar themes. His father, Sjur Monsen Bakkethun (1806-1866) emigrated from Haugesund 1858 to Long Prairie, Ill. In 1861 to Leon Township, Goodhue Co., Minn. -
Ole A. Myrvik history, 1933, 1949
Family and church histories prepared by Myrvik, a farmer born in North Dakota of Norwegian parents. The family history gives an account of the 1869 journey from Hemnes, Nordland, by way of Bergen & Montreal to Minnesota, eventually to Cabalier Co., North Dakota. Includes comments on travel by covered wagon, land sharks, snowstorms, diseases, schools, and prices of commodities and crops. The history of Stefanus (St. Stephen) Lutheran Church, Milton, North Dakota (1883-1933), includes the names of the founders and ministers and a history of the auxiliary societies. -
Christian J. Muri biography, circa 1939
An autobiographical sketch of a Montana rancher. Born on the Muri farm, Innvik, Nordfjord, he emigrated 1893 to North Dakota, moved next year to Montana, settling near Harlow (Wheatland Co.) -
Ludwig Motzfeldt clippings, 1908-1934
Clippings providing information about Motzfeldt who emigrated to Chicago about 1872. He established a trading post in Forest County, Wisconsin, and married a Chippewa woman. Included is a 3-page biographical statement about Ketil Johnsen Melstad Motzfeldt (1908). Motzfeldt died while living at Odanah, on the Bad River Indian reservation, Langlade Co., Wis. In one clipping, D.G. Ristad tells of the family in Norway. -
Mons H. Fladager correspondence, 1859-1905
Letters received by Fladager at Spring Grove, Minnesota, from his brother, Ole H. in Christiania and Rome, from an unidentified correspondent at Blue Mounds, Wisconsin, and from a son, Henry. Ole H. was a sculptor. Also, photocopy of letter written July 26, 1905 by his son, Henry (who had a clothing store in Srping Grove, MN) to "soskende barn Henrik." Contents: Mons H. Olav K. Lundeberg papers, circa 1920-circa 2000
Born at Kenyon, Minn., son of the Rev. K.O. Lundeberg (see his Papers, p1371), Lundeberg graduated from St. Olaf College in 1916, served in an Army medic and translator in France during World War I, earned graduate degrees (1923,1928) at the University of Minnesota. He taught Romance languages at Wittenberg College, the Universities of Michigan and Minnesota, and from 1931 until his death at Duke University, Durham, North Carolina. "One of his outstanding achievements at Duke was the founding of the Summer School of Spanish Studies in 1942" In addition to his scholarly writings and texts, he wrote two novels published by Augsburg Publishing House: The enchanted valley (1937) and The Story of Aino: a tale of Finland in America (1941). He also wrote many poems. The papers were donated by his son, Dr. Philip K. B. Lundeberg, 200-2001
