Nels N. Hersdal letter, 1848
Letter written in English by Nelsone (mostly known as Nelson Nelson Hersdal) of Norway, La Salle County, Illinois, to Joseph Mann, Orleans County, New York, describing his farming operations and the Mormon and Jansonist activities in the community. Nelsone was a Slooper. -
Oscar I. Hertsgaard papers, 1909-1975
Papers of a Minneapolis businessman who was involved in a wide range of church, civic and Norwegian-American activities. A graduate of St. Olaf College in 1908, he became a director of music at Concordia College, Moorhead, Minnesota, 1909-1913, after which he embarked on a long career as a representative for the Mutual Trust Insurance Company. He served many terms on the boards of Fairview Hospital and of St. Olaf College and held executive positions in a great many organizations. In 1939 he organized a Folk Festival, one of the events in honor of the visit of Crown Prince Olav and Crown Princess Martha of Norway. Because of his long association with Hallinglaget and his frequent visits to Norway, he was popularly known as "Hallingkongen." He was President of Bygdelagenes Faellesraadet for twelve years, in which connection he promoted the publication of "A Folk Epic, The Bygdelag in America," 1975. He received the St. Olav Medal in 1940 and the Knight's Cross, First Class, of the Royal Order of St. Olav, in 1947, from King Haakon of Norway. -

Palmer J. Hertsgaard poems, 1939
Poems, "When Father Led the Band," with drawings by Spike Bell; and a translation of Henrik Wergeland's poem "Christmas Eve" which was published in "Focus." Hersgaard was a grandson of a Norwegian pioneer at Kindred, North Dakota. -
Erik Hetle papers, circa 1951
Two undated articles by a Norwegian-born professor of physics at St. Olaf College: "At snakke norsk paa engelsk," typescript, 2 pages, and "Norskdommen og skolene," an undated clipping from "Decorah-Posten." "Det ble jul lell" is a one-page story that appeared in "Jul i Vesterheimen," 1951. "De tomme stoler," (translation included) a 6-page typewritten article, concerns the passing of O. E. Rolvaag.
Includes articles on Norwegian language, The Erik Hetle Story (written between 1956-1959). The story details his early life in Breim, Norway, and subsequent emigration in 1891 to South Dakota. Hetle tells of learning the English language and his quest for an education. He graduated from St. Olaf College in 1903. -
Irving H. Highland papers, 1960-1970
Correspondence and other papers relating chiefly to the Society for the Preservation of Norwegian Culture, of which Mr. Highland was president. The Society was organized to endow a chair in Norwegian Studies at the University of Chicago. The Professorship in Norwegian was established at the University on 29 October 1961, after a gift of $100,000 had been received. -
Hild Næs Hildahl papers, 1939-1986
Letters and a memoir "Listugfarmen," (16p.) by a woman who emigrated from Kragerø in 1937 to Roseau, Minnesota, after her marriage to a Norwegian-born farmer who had settled there. She tells of her life in Norway and its contrast to her life in Roseau. She had been trained in handicrafts and as a hobby began making dolls illustrating Norwegian folk tales. This grew into a business and she traveled all over the United States, showing, selling, and lecturing about her dolls.
The St. Olaf College library has a collection of her dolls that is occasionally on display. A letter from Sigvald Støylen gives information about Ms. Hildahl. Also, see Helen Billberg Granat, P 1320. One of her cassettes is "Once upon a Norwegian Time: Hild Hildahl and Her Dolls."
Includes two letters from Mrs. Hildahl to Mrs. Johl; a letter from Sigavld Stoylen giving information about Mrs. Hildahl; an article from the Minneapolis Sunday Tribune about Mrs. Hildahl, and seven boxes of yarn dolls with accompanying descriptions prepared by Hildahl. -

Copy of "Slegtbog og stamtavler over Slettemoætten" (191 pages). Among those included in the genealogy are Aagot Raaen, Gro Svendsen, and Ole Nilson.

Gertrude M. Hilleboe family papers, circa 1820-1960
Gertrud M. Hilleboe was the Dean of Women at St. Olaf College from 1915-1958. She donated her papers to NAHA in 1968. The 13 boxes were described on 10 cards which are included here. In 2000 most of the collection was transferred to the St. Olaf College Archives, with the exception of family papers with no College connection.
