Ivar and Hulda Aas/Aus family papers, 1938-2021
Records of the Ivar and Hulda Aas/Aus family. Includes information on Ivar, Hulda, and children Hans and Berit. Ivar Asbjørn Aas (1906-1993) was born in Ski, Norway on December 2, 1906. He married Hulda Unhjem in 1938. Hulda was born in Ørsta, Norway, December 20, 1909. They had two children, Hans Magnus Aas who was born in Ørsta on March 14, 1941, and Berit Marie Aas who was born in Mysen on March 6, 1947. In 1947, the family immigrated to Brooklyn, New York where Ivar was an associate pastor at Trinity Lutheran Church. In the 1950s, the family moved from Brooklyn to settle in Minneapolis, Minnesota. For many years, Ivar Aus was the pastor at the Norwegian Memorial Lutheran Church (Mindekirken) in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Ivar Aus sermons, 1968-1977
Aus was born near Oslo, and was called in 1947 to serve the Norwegian-speaking congregation at Trinity Lutheran Church in New York City. Twelve years later he became pastor of the Norwegian Lutheran Memorial Church in Minneapolis. He retired in 1971, but worked two years a Shepherd of the Hills Church in Edina, ten years at Central Lutheran Church. Sermons (and service folders) for Norwegian Advent services at Boe Memorial Chapel, St. Olaf College. Some were sponsored by the student society Idun-Edda. -

Fifty Years on Seven Seas: A Life On Board “The Ship”. Son of Sandefjord, Master Mariner, My Father Ivar Carlsen (2015, 60 page transcription, oral history conducted and edited by son, Carl Carlsen). Note from Carl Carlsen: “My father was born in Sandefjord in 1919 and was in the Norwegian merchant marine before and during WW2. ...in his narrative my father tells how he sought employment on American merchant marine vessels during WW2 and after [while based in the Philippines] in order to facilitate his acquiring American citizenship, which he did mid-century. Brooklyn figures into his narrative asa place to be while not at sea during the War and as a place to retain histies to Norway as a member of the War Sailors club after his retirement from decades of sailing with Gulf Oil. -

Ivar Hinderaker papers, 1880-1933
Ivar Hinderaker was a traveling minister in Minnesota and South Dakota in the late 19th and early 20th century. He was born in Norway in 1851 and emigrated from there in 1872 with two cousins and two neighbors. He ended up in the Midwest. A few years later he went back home to Norway but ended up returning to America along with one of his brothers and one of his sisters. He married Marie Ahre in 1881 and they had five children. Ivar passed away in 1942, ten years after Marie, and they were both buried in the Bethlehem Cemetery in Astoria, South Dakota.
The material consists of seven books kept by Ivar. The contents range from church records to personal histories to account ledgers. The books are a gift of the Family of Irving and Eula Hinderaker. In addition, there are various photographs of Norwegian-Americans from the upper midwest, including St. Olaf College and a Luther League convention. -
Ivar Viehe-Naess autobiography, circa 1912
The story of an emigrant from Nord Osen in Osterdalen, who came to Chicago in 1891, and became a successful architect there. He had studied in Copenhagen, 1890-1891, and contined for three years at the Chicago School of Architecture. He started his own firm in 1912, working mainly with banks, office buildings, churches, and hospitals. He also designed the plans for a new church built on the site of his farm home in Osen, Norway. -
