Richard W. Solberg papers, 1938-1999
A well-known Lutheran pastor, historian, writer and educator, Solberg was born in Minneapolis, son of Carl K. Solberg, brother of Carl T. Solberg. He graduated from St. Olaf College in 1938, later received graduate degrees from the University of Wisconsin (1939) and the University of Chicago (1952), and graduated from Luther seminary in 1943. He served as pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church, Ingleside, Illinois, 1943-1945, and later taught history at St. Olaf and Augustana College in Sioux Falls, S.D. He served as religious affairs advisor for the U.S. Military Government and the U.S. High Commission in Berlin (1949-1950) and as representative of the Lutheran World Federation in Germany (1953-1956). From 1964-1973 he was vice president for academic affairs at Thiel College, and from 1973-1982 he was director for higher education for the Lutheran Church in America.
In 1957 he published As between brothers: the story of Lutheran response to world need; in 1961, God and Caesar in East Germany; in 1980, How Church-related are church related colleges?; in 1985, Lutheran higher education in North America; in 1992 Open doors: the story of Lutherans resettling refugees; and in 1991, Miracle in Ethiopia. May 17, 1893"; concert flyer for Mrs. Signe Hille Kolderup at Scandia Hall (1896); invitation card to the Chicago Norske Klub's "Gentlemen's Stag!" A number of caricatures depicting men sneaking away from their wives (1919), captions include: "let 'em talk," "for a riot of a time," "bring your 'bull' and 'good cheer'," 'break away quietly," and "get home this way." -
Hans H. Solem autobiography, 1992
"The life of a Viking in America." Solem was born in Bergen, emigrated in 1930 with a ticket went by an uncle in Cloquet, Minn. He went to South Dakota where another uncle lived, to work on farms. In 1932 he returned to Cloquet to work, and married in 1936. He got training as a welder and worked in defense industries in Minneapolis.
In 1945 he purchased a Gamble store in Beresford, S.D. He visited family Norway for three months in 1948. In 1950 he sold the store and began to work in Construction, moving to Sioux Falls. In 1956 he moved Eau Claire, Wis. Again working in construction: building over 350 homes there before moving into Realty. Tells about several later trips to Norway, and visits from family there to the U.S. Written in 1993, while living in retirement in Bayfield, Wis. Gives information about his children and grandchildren. Photograph on the cover. -
William Solheim article, 1986
"The Decision to Emigrate: Adventure or Necessity," a paper based on the memoirs of Elling S. Solheim, who was born in Nordmøre in 1880 and emigrated in in 1904. The paper attempts to demonstrate emigration in terms of the "push and pull" theory. -

Chris Solum papers, 1920-1937
Correspondence, reports, and clippings of a Norwegian-born shoe manufacturer and merchant of Racine, Wisconsin. The papers deal largely with matters pertaining to the Scandinavian American Fraternity and the Sons of Norway, especially the latter's sponsorship of the Colonel Hans C. Heg monument. Letters include comments on the unemployment situation in Merrill, Wisconsin, during the 1930s. A copy of a letter (July 30, 1862) by Colonel Heg to James Denoon Reymert is also included. -
Gustav Solum papers, 1952-1953
Correspondence of a Seattle resident and one-time president of the Numedal og Kongsberglag, regarding a "bygde" book for Sandsvær, then being prepared in Norway. The papers include a roster of the names of emigrants to America from Sandsvær and Kongsberg (1866-1925) as they appeared in Kongsberg "Laagendalposten." The roster includes addresses, dates of sailings, and occasionally the names of ships. -

Gunnar O. Solwald memoirs, 1875-1977
"Remembrances from My Life", 179 pages, an autobiographical account of an 1875 emigrant from Skien, who tells about his childhood and youth and about his career as seaman, soldier, and teacher in Norway. The emigrant journey in 1875 is covered in detail; it ended near Rushford, Minnesota, where Solwald was a farmer and teacher. Later he and his family moved to Clay County, Minnesota, and in 1887 went to the state of Washington. An epilogue by Gertrude Solwold Wells tells the story of the last years of his life in Tacoma, Washington. Kjøstel Torjesen Songe papers, 1852-1853
A letter written to his brother Elef in Chicago, describing his farm buildings and produce at Wautoma, Wisconsin, in 1853, and a birth certificate and baptism issued in Holt, Norway, 1852.
