Jennie B. Hartmann papers, 1907-1993
Memoirs, letters, and clippings concerning the Norwegian community in the Northwest United States. Born in 1907 in Ålesund, Norway, she was active in community organizations in Seattle, Washington until her death in 1993. Earlier in her life she worked as a telegraph operator for the Canadian Pacific Railway Company and then for the U.S. Air Force in Alaska.

Jennifer and Beth Paulson interview, 1995 September 21
In this series of interviews by Odd Lovoll for his books “The Promise of America: History of the Norwegian-American People” and “The Promise Fulfilled: A Portrait of Norwegian Americans Today,” Terje Joranger interviews Jennifer and Beth Paulson in Green Bay, Wisconsin. They discuss their immediate family history, and talk for a while about their experiences at the Concordia College Norwegian language camp. They explain their knowledge of some Norwegian language songs and table prayers. They then discuss Lutheranism and their religious experiences, Norwegian foods and holidays, and their feelings on drugs, alcohol, and being Norwegian.

Jens Bugge clipping, 1919
Copy of a letter announcing the death of the first Norwegian-born American to be appointed to West Point Military Academy. The appointment was from Douglas County, Minnesota, in 1991. His parents had come from Odnes, Sogn. Col. Bugge held many posts in the United States Army. He was Commandant of Cadets at West Point at the time of his death. -
Jens Christian Meinich Hanson biography, 1907-1974
Copies of an untitled autobiography (284 pages, photocopy of typescript) and of the write-up in the Dictionary of American Library Biography (3 pages, 1978, by John Phillip Immroth), of the career of a distinguished Norwegian-born librarian, a graduate of Luther College in Decorah, 1882. He was chief of the Catalog Department of the Library of Congress, 1897 - 1910, where he "was directly involved in or responsible for...the Library of Congress Classification, Library of Congress subject headings, new catalog of the Library of Congress, the form and system of distribution of printed catalog cards, and formulation of catalog rules."
From 1910 to 1928 he served first as assistant director and later as acting director of the University of Chicago Libraries. From 1928 to 1934 he taught in the Graduate Library School of the University. In 1928 he also served as one of a group of American cataloging experts in the reorganization of the Vatican Library. The autobiography was edited by Oivind M. Hovde and published in 1974 by Luther College Press (321 p.), but without the index included here. Jens H. Forshaug travel report, 1951
A manuscript entitled "Alaska" by an Alaskan gold miner, reindeer inspector, and author, with comments on people, climate, geography, and history.
According to an article in "Decorah Posten," Sept. 18, 1958, Forshaug was born in Wisconsin to emigrant parents (1911); he studied at St. Olaf College and the Univ. of Alaska. When 27 he sought gold near Nome, "but one year was enough for him." He became a reindeer inspector at Barrow, and did many other kinds of work, "most interesting is his beginning book in English for Indians [Native Americans], which he called "'min røde bog.'" -
