Jens P. Vigdahl papers, 1938-1965
Born at Fortun, Sogn og Fjordane fylke, Vigdahl emigrated in 1908 to Viroqua, Vernon county, Wisconsin. He worked first on farms, then as a merchant, and from 1938 had an insurance agency. He was active in municipal and Norwegian-American organizations, serving many years as president of the Sognalag and as chair of the Bygdelagenes Faellesraad. In 1956 awarded St. Olav medal.
Includes correspondence, 1938-1965, mainly with relatives in Norway; manuscript of talk Vigdahl delivered at a Leif Erickson Fest in 1952; manuscript of a speech by Orland S. Loomis at a 1942 "I am an American day" in Viroqua sponsored by Sons of Norway; certificate of service, Lions Club, 1951/52; 4 photographs of 5th District Sons of Norway convention, (Burchett studio, Rockford, Illinois); church choir; men's club. -
Jens Rynning articles, 1839-1930
A 12-page typescript copy of an article by a Norwegian clergyman that was published in "Morgenbladet" (October 10, 1839). It includes the Hans Barlien letter which announced the death of the author's emigrant son, Ole Rynning, and offers criticism of the emigration movement. Includes an offprint of Jacob S. Worm-Muller's address on Ole Rynning (July 4, 1937).
Includes: An article by H.R.M. on Barlien is included (no source given, pp. 15-16); manuscript (1 folded sheet) with typed transcription with heading "On the death of Anna Nicoline Lund: a manuscript found among the Rynning papers." 5p.; manuscript (16 p.) of poems, with typed transcription with heading "A manuscript book of verse found among the Rynning papers 14 p. (Only one is ascribed to an author, J. St. Munch); and a letter from L. W. Boe to Theodore C. Blegen (Jan. 27, 1930) and Blegen's response (Jan. 30) concerning gift of Rynning's library to St. Olaf College.
See also papers of his son, Ole Rynning (P341) and his grandson, B.J.Muus. The latter includes a photocopy of Muus's "Jens Rynnings aet" (1894). And, in St. Olaf library, the Rynning family history. Jeremias Rost Schefstad biography, 1974
Biography of a Norwegian-born violinist who emigrated from Norway in 1888 and came to Crookston, Minnesota, where he studied at a business school and worked as a clerk for the city. He continued study of the violin and spent the years 1894-1899 at the Leipzig Conservatory. He returned to Grand Forks, North Dakota, where he spent the rest of his life as a teacher and concert artist. He had been invited by Gustav Mahler to become concertmaster of a New York orchestra, an invitation which he turned down. He contracted tuberculosis and died in Arizona at the age of 41. -
Jerome Phillips collection, 1871
Document and book (Børnebiblioteket) brought from Norway by Andreas and Maren Oledatter Christopherson when they immigrated to American in 1871 with their five children. It appears to have been composed by their pastor in Norway and was signed by him. This was an introduction for them to use to gain membership in a church and church community in America. It documents lineage, both dates and baptisms. It also documents the marriage and parentage of the parents, Andreas and Maren. Translation of the document is included. -

Jevne and Almini, Chicago history, 1855-1871
Copies of a statement by C. M. Jevne about a decorating firm in Chicago and of excerpts from "Chicago History" concerning the contribution made by this firm in the publication of "Chicago Illustrated." This volume has been called "the best source for the physical appearance of the city the Great Fire destroyed." The senior member of the firm was Otto Jevne, who came to Chicago from Faaberg, Norway, in 1853. He died in 1905.
Includes a letter from Christian H. Jevne to parents and a photograph of office. -
