Andrew A. Veblen papers, 1902-1964
The papers consist mostly of manuscript material (data, research notes, genealogical information) for Veblen's "The Valdris Book" (1920), and of World War I military service records of natives of Valdres, Norway. Among the papers are Simle and Ruste genealogies; a family sketch written in the Valdres dialect by Sam Thompson; a description of the journey from Valdres to Whalen, Minnesota, by E. A. Hjelde; letters from Nils Brandt, Juul Dieserud, Nils Flaten, J. C. M. Hanson, and Ole Juul; and a memorial statement by Dr. Laur. Larsen about G. O. Rustad, supervisor of construction operations of the first Luther College building. Veblen was a professor of physics, first president of the Valdres "bygdelag" and first editor of its magazine, and first president of the Common Council of the "bygdelags." Torbion Vetlesen American letter, circa 1846
An undated letter and transcription from "Havre Dalen I America" to Vetlesen's brother Anond, other family members and friends. The writer came to Koshkonong, Wisconsin, in 1842. He described the journey from Norway via New York, Albany, Buffalo, and Milwaukee. Despite the early deaths of two daughters and his own severe attack of ague, he expressed content with his move to America. -
Ivar Viehe-Naess autobiography, circa 1912
The story of an emigrant from Nord Osen in Osterdalen, who came to Chicago in 1891, and became a successful architect there. He had studied in Copenhagen, 1890-1891, and contined for three years at the Chicago School of Architecture. He started his own firm in 1912, working mainly with banks, office buildings, churches, and hospitals. He also designed the plans for a new church built on the site of his farm home in Osen, Norway. -
Jens P. Vigdahl papers, 1938-1965
Born at Fortun, Sogn og Fjordane fylke, Vigdahl emigrated in 1908 to Viroqua, Vernon county, Wisconsin. He worked first on farms, then as a merchant, and from 1938 had an insurance agency. He was active in municipal and Norwegian-American organizations, serving many years as president of the Sognalag and as chair of the Bygdelagenes Faellesraad. In 1956 awarded St. Olav medal.
Includes correspondence, 1938-1965, mainly with relatives in Norway; manuscript of talk Vigdahl delivered at a Leif Erickson Fest in 1952; manuscript of a speech by Orland S. Loomis at a 1942 "I am an American day" in Viroqua sponsored by Sons of Norway; certificate of service, Lions Club, 1951/52; 4 photographs of 5th District Sons of Norway convention, (Burchett studio, Rockford, Illinois); church choir; men's club. -

Recommendations and biographical sketches of a Norwegian-born teacher and farmer of Ottertail County, Minnesota. Recommendations and biographical sketches of a teacher and farmer of Ottertail County, Minnesota.Born at Dovre, Gudbrandsdal, he was trained as a teacher at Asker Teaching College, and taught school at Trondheim and Vaage, 1863-1868. Emigrated 1868 to Spring Prairie, Wis. where he taught parochial school until 1871 when he moved to the Norwegian Grove community in Ottertail County. Taught parochial school there and served as secretary of Ringsaker congregation 1883-1907. Published two books and articles in Decorah Posten and Lutheran church papers. Married June 7, 1873 Anne Maria Jacobson (1855- ). -

Edward L. Vinje travel journal, 1920
Traveling with his mother, Serine Vinje Odegaard, the two toured Norway from May to August, 1920. After returning to his home in Bottineau, North Dakota, Edward, a World War I army veteran, took his own life in December. The family lore is that he suffered from “shell shock” or post-traumatic stress disorder after returning from military duty. -

Includes the Norwegian published version and translated version by Norman Vinnes. "Nils Vinnes: A Grandfather's Legacy" covers the story of Nils Olai Larsson Vinnes from Vinnesvåg, Norway. This publication discusses his call to be a preacher and emigration to America in 1946.
