Gustav Solum papers, 1952-1953
Correspondence of a Seattle resident and one-time president of the Numedal og Kongsberglag, regarding a "bygde" book for Sandsvær, then being prepared in Norway. The papers include a roster of the names of emigrants to America from Sandsvær and Kongsberg (1866-1925) as they appeared in Kongsberg "Laagendalposten." The roster includes addresses, dates of sailings, and occasionally the names of ships. -
Kjøstel Torjesen Songe papers, 1852-1853
A letter written to his brother Elef in Chicago, describing his farm buildings and produce at Wautoma, Wisconsin, in 1853, and a birth certificate and baptism issued in Holt, Norway, 1852. -
John J. Sonsteby papers, 1871-1937
Correspondence, copies of official records, military correspondence, city of Chicago official correspondence, minutes of meetings of Chicago Common Council, excerpts from the Journal of the Illinois Legislature, and notes from various publications concerning the Chicago fire (October 8-9, 1871), and the part played by the Norwegian National Guard of Chicago organized September 30, 1870.
The papers, which include a list of names of the members, deal largely with the problem of compensation for services rendered during the 13 days following the fire. Sonsteby, the chief justice of the Chicago Municipal Court, gathered this material for a projected monograph on the Norwegian Guard. Several articles in the file concern Sonsteby and his legal career. Includes: Correspondence regarding General Sheridan and the "Norwegian Battalion" consisting of four companies, which were called upon for service during and immediately after the great Chicago fire of 1871. List of men who served under the Chicago Police Force from Oct. 10 till Oct 23, 1871. Includes address delivered at the annual 17th of May Festival under the auspices of the Norwegian National League in Chicago by John J. Sonsteby (ca. 1929). -

Adolf Steen biography, 1899-1951
Nils Paul Xavier, 1839-1918, the Kautokeino-Lapp Who Became Minister in Amerika, 3 typescript pages, by Adolph Steen and translated by Magdalene Xavier Visovatti, a granddaughter of Xavier. The file includes an obituary (clipping) of Xavier. -
Hans Tønnesen Steene travel pamphlet, 1854-1925
A copy of "Beretning om en 3 Aars Reise i Amerikaforetagen i Aarene 1849 til 1852 iblandt de norske Emigranter i de Forenede Stater i Nord-amerika, (36 typescript pages)" an account of the author's preaching and teaching journey in Illinois and Wisconsin from 1849 to 1852. -
Halle Steensland papers, 1885-1923
Hard Times and How They May Be Avoided, a biographical sketch entitled "Erindringer", a collection of clippings (1903-1923), and "Af Vore Indvandrers liv," a "Symra" offprint, 1909. Steensland was a Norwegian-born merchant, banker, and philanthropist in Madison, Wisconsin. Includes a paper presented to Ygdrasil Literary Society (Feb. 11, 1978) by Bryon C. Ostby, "Halle Steensland, 1832-1910" 22 p. typescript. -
Ole Steensland papers, 1900-1963
Papers of a western Dane County, Wisconsin, farmer, biographical data, an address given at a reunion of the Fifteenth Wisconsin Infantry at Scandia Hall, Chicago (August 29, 1900), in which Steensland recounts his Civil War Experiences including those at Andersonville prison, a temperance lecture given at Perry, Wisconsin, "A Condensed History of Steensland's Life," 20 pages, and photocopies of a 1900 speech by Steensland printed in an unidentified newspaper and of an obituary. -
Gabriel Stene cippings, 1903-1962
A collection of articles, most them in the form of clippings, by a Wisconsin-born farmer at Norway Lake, Minnesota. According to his obituary he was much involved in community and religious affairs and wrote about pioneer days in "Decorah-Posten" under the name "Pionergutten." Stene was born near Rio, Wisconsin to emigrant parents who moved to Norway Lake in 1867. According to his obituary, "Gabriel was a very well-known man, very involved in community and religious affairs. He has written much about the pioneer days, among other things writings in "Decorah Posten" with the name "Pionergutten." -

Reports of a Norwegian-born engineer to the New York City Tunnel Authority, and to the Washington Toll Bridge Authority, and articles on engineering problems. The file includes two obituaries. Includes publication from the World Engineering Congress Tokio (1929) "Ventilation of Vehicular Tunnels" by Ole Singstad, "Bau von Unterwassertunneln in den Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika" (1933), "Vehicular and Pedestrian Tunnels at Antwerp" (1934), "Industrial Operations in Compressed air," (1936), "Planning and Construction of the Queens Midtown Tunnel" (1938), "Engineering Problems Related to the Health of Workers in Compressed Air," (1939).
