NAHA Archives Fellowship

New for 2024, this fellowship provides support for research of the Norwegian-American experience. One award of up to $2000 will be available for a specific research project by a graduate student or advanced career scholar.

The NAHA Archives Fellowship promotes exploration into new understandings of the Norwegian-American experience as articulated in the Association’s research prospectus. Candidates may also propose a topic that falls outside of the prospectus. Preference will be given to projects that rely heavily on collections in the archives of the Norwegian-American Historical Association. In addition, preference will be given to research in the following categories, as described in the NAHA research prospectus: New historical eras, new geographical areas, cross-cultural encounters, application of newer theoretical models, and other under-researched topics, such as Norwegian-American women and diplomacy. See the NAHA research prospectus for more information.

Annual Deadline: October 1

NAHA Publications Fellowship

The new publications fellowship provides support for research of the Norwegian-American experience. One award of $2,500 is available for a specific research project to scholars at any stage of their career.

The Fellowship supports research in the field of Norwegian-American studies. While a candidate may propose a project on any topic, priority will be given in accordance with the stated goals of NAHA as articulated in the Association’s research prospectus:

  • While recognizing that research in the first century of Norwegian emigration remains a viable area of research, the Association encourages research that examines the “second century and beyond” of the Norwegian-American experience;
  • Research questions focusing on the Norwegian-American experiences outside of the traditional center of immigrant settlement in the Upper Midwest, such as the Pacific Northwest, the Northeast, the South and the Southwest are encouraged;
  • Research examining the contacts, actions, and interactions with other immigrant groups and/or indigenous peoples would help to place the Norwegian immigrant experience in a larger cultural and historical context;
  • Research that examines new theoretical models such as identity theory, transnationalism, whiteness theory, borderlands theory, feminist theory, and more are encouraged.
  • Research that makes use of the collections available at the NAHA Archive when  appropriate to the project is encouraged, but not required.

Annual Deadline: October 1
