A continuing file for newspaper clippings and other materials which describe specific communities where Norwegians settled. References to similar accounts found in other collections are added as they are identified. -
Søren Bache diary, 1839-1947
A copy of the diary which Bache kept during his visits to America, 1839-1947; a transcription by Andreas Elviken; issues of Norsk Ungdom, December 1927-April 1929, in which portions of the diary was first printed; and photographs of Bache and his wife and of Bache's cabin at Muskego. The NAHA published a translation of the diary in 1951 as A Chronicle of Old Muskego. The published book omits "certain materials that Bache obviously copied from manuals and other sources that fell into his hands; letters transcribed on pages 1-4; and the portion of the diary (pages 196-206) after Bache's departure from America." It includes as an appendix the passenger list of the Johanna, on which Bache returned after a visit home.

Andreas Larsen Dahl photographs and books, 1872-1880
Andreas Larsen Dahl was born in Skrautvall, Valdres, Norway. Dahl emigrated in 1869, joining an older brother in DeForest, Dane County, Wisconsin. From 1873 until his ordination in 1883 he worked as a traveling photographer in southern Wisconsin and in Iowa, providing an invaluable picture of life at that time.
Dahl made more than 1,200 images of people, towns, and landscapes primarily in Dane County. His photographs illustrate the development of Dane County and the growth of many of its towns and villages including Madison, Mazomanie, and Middleton, as well as rural farm life in the county. Dahl also photographed families, including many Norwegian, Swedish, and other immigrants, in front of their homes and farms, often with their most prized possessions. The negatives are held at the Wisconsin Historical Society in Madison, Wisconsin.

John Karl Daniels collection, 1913-1958
About the work of the noted Minnesota sculptor, born Nordland, who emigrated with his family in 1884. His best-known works are: statue of Senator Knute Nelson on the capitol grounds, St. Paul (1928); the Pioneer Square monument (Mpls) (1936); the Leif Erikson statue (1949) also on the capitol grounds. A copy of the last was installed in Duluth in 1956. Also: the buffalo in front of the former North American Life Insurance Building near the Walker Art Center, Mpls.; a portrait bust of Dr. William Mayo at the Univ. of Minnesota; a statue of Washington in Austin, Minn. (1937); statues of General John B. Sanborn and Col. Alexander Wilkin in the rotunda of the capitol; a Spanish-American war monument in Grafton, ND; Civil War monuments (copies in Andersonville, Georgia; Memphis, Tenn.; Little Rock, Ark.). He also worked on various projects with Frank Lloyd Wright.
Clippings (original and photocopy), June 23, 1913-July 31, 1958. The collection includes a letter (Feb. 10, 1916) to John Mohn of Northfield thanking him for an article Mohn had written and inquiring quote (about the movement on foot to erect a statue of St. Olaf on the campus of St. Olaf College.) One clipping gives Daniels' view on the Kensington Runestone. -

Papers of a mutual benefit society, originally called the Skandinaviske Forbund af America. Volume: Harald Lodge no. 84 (Rockford, Illinois) Record book. 1 v. Includes list of members 1907-09, with address, date of joining, in some cases place and date of birth. Where place of birth is given, it is Sweden. Olav K. Lundeberg papers, circa 1920-circa 2000
Born at Kenyon, Minn., son of the Rev. K.O. Lundeberg (see his Papers, p1371), Lundeberg graduated from St. Olaf College in 1916, served in an Army medic and translator in France during World War I, earned graduate degrees (1923,1928) at the University of Minnesota. He taught Romance languages at Wittenberg College, the Universities of Michigan and Minnesota, and from 1931 until his death at Duke University, Durham, North Carolina. "One of his outstanding achievements at Duke was the founding of the Summer School of Spanish Studies in 1942" In addition to his scholarly writings and texts, he wrote two novels published by Augsburg Publishing House: The enchanted valley (1937) and The Story of Aino: a tale of Finland in America (1941). He also wrote many poems. The papers were donated by his son, Dr. Philip K. B. Lundeberg, 200-2001

Mons H. Fladager correspondence, 1859-1905
Letters received by Fladager at Spring Grove, Minnesota, from his brother, Ole H. in Christiania and Rome, from an unidentified correspondent at Blue Mounds, Wisconsin, and from a son, Henry. Ole H. was a sculptor. Also, photocopy of letter written July 26, 1905 by his son, Henry (who had a clothing store in Srping Grove, MN) to "soskende barn Henrik." Contents: Mons H. Ludwig Motzfeldt clippings, 1908-1934
Clippings providing information about Motzfeldt who emigrated to Chicago about 1872. He established a trading post in Forest County, Wisconsin, and married a Chippewa woman. Included is a 3-page biographical statement about Ketil Johnsen Melstad Motzfeldt (1908). Motzfeldt died while living at Odanah, on the Bad River Indian reservation, Langlade Co., Wis. In one clipping, D.G. Ristad tells of the family in Norway.
