Martha M. Brye scrapbook, 1883
Scrapbook of clippings from American and Norwegian newspapers compiled by a schoolteacher and nurse from Coon Valley and La Crosse, Wisconsin. Among the items are a poem by Kristofer Janson, O. J. Breda's address at the Kristofer Janson festival in Decorah, and Laur. Larsen's address at the President Garfield memorial program in Decorah. The sources of the clippings are not given, last noted date is 1883. -

Contains pictures, programs, and clippings from Thompson's student days at St. Olaf College [Academy, 1893] and Luther College as well as from the Mount Horeb Academy. Mount Horeb Academy, St. Olaf College, Luther College. Majority of items are Luther College. Includes football ticket for game between Carleton and Luther (ca. 1895), concert program for St. Olaf College (Feb. 24, 1896) featuring: orchestra, glee club, Mathilda Finseth, C.J. Rollefson, and A. Lavik, St. Olaf Band program for March 9, 1896, program bill for Madame Ragna Linne concert with tickets. -
Teachers' Association of Norwegian Synod records, 1890-1902
Minutes of an organization founded in 1890. Among the topics discussed were bilingualism, introduction of new courses, methods of instruction, athletics, discipline, social life, relations between Luther College and the academies, terminal courses for all students. Consisting of the teachers at Luther College, Luther Seminary, Lutheran Normal Schools (Sioux Falls), Luther Academy (Albert Lea), Bode Academy (Bode, Iowa), Bruflat Academy (Portland, N.D.), plus representatives from the Synod board and clergy. -
Andreas Larsen Dahl photographs and books, 1872-1880
Andreas Larsen Dahl was born in Skrautvall, Valdres, Norway. Dahl emigrated in 1869, joining an older brother in DeForest, Dane County, Wisconsin. From 1873 until his ordination in 1883 he worked as a traveling photographer in southern Wisconsin and in Iowa, providing an invaluable picture of life at that time.
Dahl made more than 1,200 images of people, towns, and landscapes primarily in Dane County. His photographs illustrate the development of Dane County and the growth of many of its towns and villages including Madison, Mazomanie, and Middleton, as well as rural farm life in the county. Dahl also photographed families, including many Norwegian, Swedish, and other immigrants, in front of their homes and farms, often with their most prized possessions. The negatives are held at the Wisconsin Historical Society in Madison, Wisconsin.

Olaf B. Stephens (Hustvedt) papers, circa 1890-1940
Description Papers of a farmer, district school teacher, and book store proprietor, consisting of reminiscences about pioneer life mostly in eastern Dane County, Wisconsin, southeastern Dakota, and Luther College. The anecdotes concern neighbors and relatives, wild life, and farm buildings, machinery, and operations. There are references to R.B. Anderson, Kristofer Jansen, Laur. Larsen, and Halvor Kostveit, the reputed killer of Joseph Smith. Stephens was born in Koshkonong, attended Luther College in 1862 - 1865 and 1864 - 1865, and lived in Dakota, Bemidji and Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Rice Lake, Ladysmith, and Deerfield, Wisconsin. Parelius Rognlie papers
Biography/History:
Rev. Parelius H. Rognlie was born near Trondhjem, Norway, December 21, 1858. In 1870 he immigrated with his parents to the United States and lived in Houston County and eventually Lyon County, Minnesota. In 1881 he entered the preparatory school at St. Olaf's college, Northfield, Minnesota, and later attended Luther College, Decorah, Iowa, earning his way by teaching school and doing farm work. In the fall of 1885 he went to Europe in order to receive treatment for his eyes and was operated on at the State Hospital in Norway. When he returned to the United States, he resumed teaching and continued his studies by himself. In 1888 he was admitted to the Luther Theological Seminary, Minneapolis, and graduated June 26, 1891. In February, 1891, he was called as pastor for the Fort Ridgely, Dale, Palmyra and Clear Lake congregations, Renville and Sibley counties, Minnesota. On July 22, 1891, he was ordained at Fort Ridgely and Dale church by Rt. Rev. K. Bjorge, assisted by Rev. S. J. Bergh, Rev. N. P. Xavier, Rev. Thomas Johnsen and Rev. B. Askevold.
Parelius Rognlie was married to Ronnaug Marie M. Gullerud. Together they had six children: Ingolf Herman Marentius (March 26, 1896); Katharina Josephine (December 26, 1897); Parelius Monrad (January 28, 1900, died July 2, 1901); Palma Margrethe (born April 8, 1902); Clarence Parelius Monrad (May 6, 1904); Julia Christine (October 4, 1908).
Abstract:
The Rev. Parelius H. Rognlie papers consist of photographs of multiple generations of the Rognlie extended family, personal and professional correspondence, sermons, school notebooks, and various other records that document the life of a pastor in Southwestern Minnesota. Records also include photographs of Nils Xavier, a Sami pastor who originally homesteaded in the Rognlie parsonage.

- The Bennett-Law, passed in 1889, required school attendance of children from 7 to 14 years of age in Wisconsin. The stipulation that instruction be in English was opposed by supporters of the parochial schools.
- "Slaveristriden i ny belysning" (offprint from "Teologisk tidsskrift," January 1905), 34 pages. Article on Herman Amberg Preus (Decorah Posten, March 20, 1920 reprint of an article which appeared in "Symra," volume 6, 1910, pages 114-125).

Knut Eilevson Berge (Bergh) poems, circa 1857
Manuscript volume of 4 poems about immigration to America. Bergh was a teacher at Luther College, 1868-1872. Born in Voss to Ellef Storksen Berge, he emigrated in 1857 and taught in Liberty Prairie, Wisconsin and Big Canoe, Iowa. Representative in Iowa legislature, 1872. Poems in Norwegian.
